Today’s Quote: Drunk on Butter Cookies

“Today the air in my mother’s kitchen was heavy with butter cookies baking in the oven. My mom used real butter and real vanilla, and the vanilla scent clung to my skin and hung in my hair. The kitchen was warm and cluttered with women, and I was drunk on butter cookies.”

~ Janet Evanovich (“Visions of Sugarplums”)

Today’s Quote: Why Politicize Food?

In response to being told by journalist Kim Severson that there was a lot of recent pushback on social media regarding chefs who talk about politics:

“Fuck that. Fuck that. There is nothing, look, is there anything on this planet more political than food? No there is not.”

~ Anthony Bourdain

Note: I currently have 20+ Anthony Bourdain quotes, so you’ll be seeing lots of him. And since the one above was from earlier this month–I’d say that’s a pretty good sign that there will be plenty of new content to add to my collection.

Today’s Quote: Tea is the answer to every problem

“In Britain, a cup of tea is the answer to every problem.

Fallen off your bicycle? Nice cup of tea.

Your house has been destroyed by a meteorite? Nice cup of tea and a biscuit.

Your entire family has been eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex that has travelled through a space/time portal? Nice cup of tea and a piece of cake. Possibly a savoury option would be welcome here too, for example a Scotch egg or a sausage roll.”

~ David Walliams (“Mr Stink”)

New Project – Sharing my Food / Culinary Quote Collection

Sometime in 2002, I started collecting quotes about food and culinary life. If I had a reason for this, I’ve long since forgotten what it was. I do, however, blame my Mother for this quirk. Currently, my collection contains well over 1500 quotes.

Most of these quotes are about food (the eating of, preparation of, and even the lack thereof), nutrition, food politics and advocacy, and various aspects of the the culinary world. In some rare cases, there are quotes about things completely unrelated to food that are there to remind me why I sometimes find myself in kitchen when nothing else in life makes sense.

Many quotes come from books, articles, blogs, TV, film, conversations I’ve overheard, my lecture notes, and even once, from a friend’s Facebook post. Others come from various other collections of quotes (both printed and online).

Today’s Quote:

Food matters because it’s one of the things that forces us to live in this world — this tactile, physical, messy, and beautiful world — no matter how hard we try to escape into our minds and our ideals. Food is a reminder of our humanity, our fragility, our createdness.

~Shauna Niequist (“Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes”)

Disclaimers:

Please note that just because I’ve included a quote in my collection, that does not necessarily mean I agree with the thought or idea (there will be many of these). I do have my reasons for including them, but that is a topic for a different time.

My source formatting is not consistent. I apologize for that. Hopefully one day I’ll get around to fixing it, but today is not that day. If there are mistakes in the attribution, please let me know so I can verify and update my information.

Once I figure out the best way to store the full collection online, I’ll set it up. But for now I’ll try to upload a single quote a day. (Based on the number of quotes currently in my spreadsheet, that should keep me busy for the next 4.3 years or so.)

If, for whatever reason, someone is looking for a food/culinary quote on a specific topic, leave a comment to let me know and I’ll see what I have.
