Special Techniques Not-On-A-Cake: Entries of fondant, gumpaste, sugar molding, color flow, royal icing, etc. Displayed as an individual technique and NOT as a decoration on a cake. A combination of techniques and mediums may be used, but it must be presented alone and not as part of a cake.

Faces of Carnival

I’m beginning to recognize Lisette’s work when she’s experimenting with polymer techniques with fondant.

1st Place
Title: Faces of Carnaval
by Lisette D. Vergara
Inspired by Alice Stroppel’s polymer clay art. The faces are the composite of smaller canes forming the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, etc. Thin slices are then cut reveling the face design. The hair styles as well as the gowns all display different techniques to roll fondant in canes.

That’s it for the Professional Division, now on the the Masters.

Felix the Cake

Felix the Cake

This is a half-sheet sized cake that is frosted buttercream with a fondant decoration. The cake is half yellow with strawberry and cream cheese filling and half chocolate with ganache and chocolate cream cheese filling.

Felix the Cat

Felix the Cat is made of fondant. The black part is homemade MM chocolate fondant, while I used a Satin Ice sample I was given for all the white and other colored parts of Felix and his bag.

Baby Shower Cake

Now that I’m receiving more request for fondant cakes, I’m learning how to make my own fondant.  Right now I’m still at the marshmallow fondant level, which is much better than store bought, but not great.  Some friends from work who’ve commissioned some of my best cakes wanted a gender neutral baby shower cake for a very traditional couple.  That meant no spaceships, cthulhu, or movie and music tribute cakes like I normally design for them.

The theme was baby farm animals and the color was a  light brown with the baby boy and girl colors (the photos didn’t come out quite right this time for some reason.  It’s as if the more expensive the camera is, the crappier my photos turn out).

Baby Shower Cake 02

Baby Shower Sheep Cake - tail

More sheep, crappy lighting

The sheep was the cutest thing I could think of that I’d want on a cake, so I went with that.  It wasn’t until about a week later that I found out the couple the shower was for also work at my company and that I’d met them before.  That’s always fun.

2010 Cake Show: Adult Intermediate, part three

Adult Intermediate Division: Developing skills. 2 to 4 years cake decorating experience; 30 to 60 hours of cake decorating or sugar art instruction. Open to all styles.

  • Confections Not-On-A-Cake
These are cupcakes, cookies, candy, chocolate, etc. An individual entry, not on a cake.

With the exception of one entry, the Confections category was filled with cookies – even the egg entries were cookies. Since this is the first time I had ever entered a decorated item to That Takes the Cake (last year was the tasting competion), I’m going to post ALL the entries for this style. Sadly, I didn’t get the names of all the participants and pieces.
