A Preview of a few of the Cakes from the Show

These are just a few that caught my eye today, and I don’t have any names of the creators since they were still judging some of them as I was taking photos (I’m missing some of the titles as well as I didn’t want to keep getting in everyone’s way). Also, these only go up partway through the Intermediate division because it’s getting late and I haven’t had much sleep lately.

Forgot to collect the title of the cake – but I’m betting this one was made by Tyler Gary.

I think I’m beginning to like this color more than I used to.

And this is one of the better versions of this year’s big trend…peacocks (and grey).

2011 Cake Show: Adult Advanced Division

Adult Advanced

More refined skills. 4 to 6 years cake decorating experience; 60 to 90 hours of cake decorating or sugar art instruction. Open to all styles.

***I somehow missed the majority of the entries for this division. I have no idea how that happened, but you can check out That Takes the Cake’s site for a slide show anytime you want to see all the winners.***

I should probably mention that if you click on the picture, it will take you to a larger image.

Special Occasion/Novelty Tiered Cakes: Cakes with two or more tiers. Can be stacked or tiered. Novelty/ special occasion cakes does not include wedding or anniversary cakes. Any sugar mediums or techniques may be used.

Safari Engagement Extravaganza

1st Place
Title: Safari Engagement Extravaganza
by Susie Araya
Business Name: Susie’s Victorian Cakes

This was the only entry for the Novelty Tiered category. So here are some more photos of it ( you can tell I really like her work and you’ll have a better understanding of why in just a moment).

Oriental Fantasy - right

cherry blossoms 2

1st Place
Title: Oriental Fantasy
(not sure that last word is correct, it looked like “Frantarcy” on the entry form and it’s either Fantasy, or some obscure word I’m not familiar with)
by Susie Araya
Business Name: Susie’s Victorian Cakes

Romanticism

Romanticism - left

2nd Place
Title: Romanticism
The cake represents different locations of a Boguese [sic] Mansion. The top is a replica of a statue at the mansion.
by Susie Araya
Business Name: Susie’s Victorian Cakes
It took some searching, but I think she was referring to the Villa Borghese. The sculpture at the top of the cake looks like Bernini’s Pluto and Proserpina, but with a lot more fabric to cover up the naughty bits.

While her printing on all her entry forms suck, her painting is absolutely amazing. And she’s not even finished winning yet.

(No photos of third place for this category.)

Norene

Spring Awakening

Title: Spring Awakening

There was a note by the cake that said the monogram at the top of the cake had broken in transit.

I didn’t get any photos of the winners. But I did get another Peacock cakes that had a design I really liked. It was made by the winner of second place in this category.

Spiderman and Catwoman in New York City
by Janet Barron
Business Name: Exquisite Sugar

Metropolis Mayhem - closeup

Am I the only one confused by the combination of Catwoman with Spiderman, as well as the reference to both Metropolis AND New York City? (Yes, I’m aware that Metropolis is supposed to be NYC, but why mention both? And once again, yes I am aware that there have been crossovers between DC and Marvel in the past… but that doesn’t make this any less awkward.)

(No photos of third place for this category.)

Confections Not-On-A-Cake: Cupcakes, cookies, candy, chocolate, etc. An individual entry, not on a cake.

2011 Cake Show: Adult Intermediate Division, part one

Adult Intermediate

Developing skills. 2 to 4 years cake decorating experience; 30 to 60 hours of cake decorating or sugar art instruction. Open to all styles.

There were so many entries in this division that I’m breaking it up into three posts so I can include all the cakes I liked, plus talk about my own entry (who’s going to brag if I don’t?).

***As with most of the divisions and categories, I didn’t photograph every entry. These are ones I liked or that caught my eye for some reason.***

Special Occasion/Novelty One Tier: Any non-tiered cake with a theme such a Birthday, Holiday, Wedding, etc. Any sugar mediums or techniques may be used.

I didn’t get any photos of the first and second place winners. I’m actually kinda surprised by that since the first place winner had a tiny rose bouquet on top of the cake that was beautifully done, and I’m such a sucker for well-done roses.

Coraline

3rd Place
Title: Coraline
by Summer FraceĀ“

A mouse from Coraline

The thread texture is amazing, but Summer said it was a happy accident:

“I used a clay extruder and the fondant I used was something I’ve never used before. It was Chocopan and it was really dry and crumbly. I was initially going to cover the entire cake and then adhere the thread to that, but I couldn’t get it to cover. It was a nightmare and I was so upset. So I just put the thread directly on the buttercream and it was so dry and weird, it just came out like that. It looks really cool, but it was pure luck.”

This was a scary little cake. Although that may have something to do with the original clapping monkey doll creeping me out too. I’d have to stab this cake a few times through it’s cold little heart a few times before I could eat it.
