New Project – Sharing my Food / Culinary Quote Collection

Sometime in 2002, I started collecting quotes about food and culinary life. If I had a reason for this, I’ve long since forgotten what it was. I do, however, blame my Mother for this quirk. Currently, my collection contains well over 1500 quotes.

Most of these quotes are about food (the eating of, preparation of, and even the lack thereof), nutrition, food politics and advocacy, and various aspects of the the culinary world. In some rare cases, there are quotes about things completely unrelated to food that are there to remind me why I sometimes find myself in kitchen when nothing else in life makes sense.

Many quotes come from books, articles, blogs, TV, film, conversations I’ve overheard, my lecture notes, and even once, from a friend’s Facebook post. Others come from various other collections of quotes (both printed and online).

Today’s Quote:

Food matters because it’s one of the things that forces us to live in this world — this tactile, physical, messy, and beautiful world — no matter how hard we try to escape into our minds and our ideals. Food is a reminder of our humanity, our fragility, our createdness.

~Shauna Niequist (“Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes”)

Please note that just because I’ve included a quote in my collection, that does not necessarily mean I agree with the thought or idea (there will be many of these). I do have my reasons for including them, but that is a topic for a different time.

My source formatting is not consistent. I apologize for that. Hopefully one day I’ll get around to fixing it, but today is not that day. If there are mistakes in the attribution, please let me know so I can verify and update my information.

Once I figure out the best way to store the full collection online, I’ll set it up. But for now I’ll try to upload a single quote a day. (Based on the number of quotes currently in my spreadsheet, that should keep me busy for the next 4.3 years or so.)

If, for whatever reason, someone is looking for a food/culinary quote on a specific topic, leave a comment to let me know and I’ll see what I have.

Link dump time again

I was out sick for the past week.  I was also way to groggy to post, but I did mark all the crap I found interesting while I was out (sleeping 17+ hours a day makes you desperate for something different to do that doesn’t involve moving or thinking–and the internet was perfect for the job).  So here’s the non-video stuff. (I’d put up the video links later this weekend.)

How to make deep fried butter from a new website I found.  The recipe sounds better than the title does.

“She needs energyless, artificially sweetened foods and beverages like a turtle needs a seat belt.  Sugar swings.  Serve some.” (A sugar industry ad from 1966)

“…there are still people in their eighties who remember austerity scrimping and saving, and many others who, like me, have lived in the shadows of such memories, and with the mentality of making do.” Here comes austerity chic.

Bear, don’t eat that! (a cat link for my husband)

An article about a 26 page recipe for brownies (click here to download the actual recipe).

The Food Timeline is a massive repository of food history, recipes, and information. A small example covers 20th century American foods. I’ll be wasting a lot of time here.

An open letter to the assholes who dumped two young dogs.

I would arm-wrestle my husband to hang this in my home.

Space kitty cake goes “pew pew”!  I’m not really sure how to describe it, other than adorable in a truly odd way.
